Introduction to Creative Aging: Myths of Aging and the Power of the Arts
Join us to learn about the myths of aging and how arts engagement benefits older adults.
- Jorge Merced, Associate Artistic Director of Pregones Theater, will provide a keynote on Creative Aging and an interactive exploration of the different approaches used across the continuum of care.
- Dr. Walter Nieri, Director of The Center for Health Aging at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, will share current research on healthy aging and the factors that contribute to quality of life.
Who should attend? Anyone interested in the vital relationship between the arts and quality of life for older adults, including aging or healthcare service organization staff, teaching artists, and arts organization staff.
This event is free, but registration is required. Registration closes Tuesday, January 12, 2016.
This AZ Creative Aging event is presented at no cost to attendees thanks to the generous support of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
The first of several online and in-person information sessions for potential applicants to the Festival and Community Investment Grant programs will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at 3:30pm. Prior to the March 17 application deadline for these grant programs, arts Commission staff will present online information sessions to help applicants prepare their application materials.

Introduction and Approaches to Creative Aging
Creative Aging is an exciting national movement to advance understanding of the vital relationship between creative expression and healthy aging. Join us in this experiential workshop to learn more about Creative Aging and how arts engagement benefits older adults. Guest artists, Maria Genné and Jane Tygesson will share some of the latest research in Creative Aging and lead an interactive exploration of the different approaches used across the continuum of care. The workshop will also introduce possibilities for participatory art making in dance, music, visual arts, poetry and story, and participants will leave with concrete tools and ideas to use in their own programs and work.
Who should attend? Anyone interested in the vital relationship between the arts and quality of life for older adults, including aging or healthcare service organization staff, caregivers, volunteers, teaching artists, and arts organizations.
Registration cost is $5. Registration closes Tuesday, February 16, 2016 or once capacity has been reached.
Join Goodyear Arts & Culture Commission on February 23, 2016, at 7:00pm to hear Arizona Poet Laureate Alberto Rios share about his life and literary work. Light refreshments will be served. This program is offered for free and does not require registration.

Do Arizonans attend the arts? Are Arizona’s arts organizations truly undercapitalized? On Friday, March 25, 2016, Arizona Commission on the Arts Grants and Operations Coordinator Ben Watters will present a data-driven analysis of Arizona’s non-profit arts organizations and break down common misconceptions surrounding the sector. Using data aggregated via DataArts’ Cultural Data Profile, Watters will examine trends in revenue streams and how they relate to changes in modes of arts participation and engagement. Watters will also look at models of development for young and emerging organizations and employment of artists and other art workers.
Hosted by ASU’s School of Film, Dance & Theatre, this presentation is free and open to the public.

- Arts Learning Collaboration Grants enhance the work of arts educators, classroom teachers and school-based arts programs through collaborative projects taking place in-school (during regular school hours), after-school, or during summer/inter-session and in-services.
- Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants enhance the work of community and social service organizations/ governmental entities through partnership projects with professional teaching artists and/or arts organizations.
Grant guidelines for both Arts Learning Collaboration Grants and Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants are available for review now. The application period for Cycle A will open the first week of April, 2016.

Join the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Prescott Meals on Wheels for a workshop on creativity and aging with Gary Glazner, award winning poet and Founder/Director of the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project. This fun, high-energy workshop is packed-full of simple techniques to help imagine high-quality arts programs for older adults, build communication skills and help increase the ability to connect with people living with memory loss.

Join the Arizona Historical Society for an evening with Arizona Poet Laureate Alberto Ríos. Ríos will share some of his work and discuss the role that oral history plays in his writing. A native of Nogales, Arizona, Ríos writes about life along the U.S. and Mexico border, blending the personal with the political in a way that makes us see both in a new light.

The Arizona Commission on the Arts is proud to host a special orientation session for the Southwest Folklife Alliance (SFA) Master-Apprentice Award.
The Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award is designed to support the teaching/learning relationship between traditional artists and their apprentices. The goal of this award is to strengthen the transmission of community-based traditions throughout the Southwestern United States. The award supports a master artist or tradition bearer who has identified a qualified apprentice (or group of apprentices), to engage in a relationship that includes intensive learning, one-on-one mentorship and hands-on experience in his/her traditional artistic practice.
