Southwest Folklife Alliance’s Master-Apprentice Grant Award is designed to support the teaching/learning relationship between traditional artists and their apprentices. The goal of this award is to strengthen the transmission of community-based traditions throughout the Southwestern United States. The award supports a master artist or tradition bearer who has identified a qualified apprentice (or group of apprentices), to engage in a relationship that includes intensive learning, one-on-one mentorship and hands-on experience in his/her traditional artistic practice.

Alberto Álvaro Ríos, born in 1952 in Nogales, Arizona, is the author of ten books and chapbooks of poetry, three collections of short stories, and a memoir. In August 2013, Ríos was appointed Arizona’s first Poet Laureate. Ríos is a Regents’ Professor at Arizona State University, where he has taught for over 30 years.
The inaugural Poet Laureate of Arizona and National Book Award finalist visits with his thirteenth book of poetry, which casts an intense desert light on the stories that unfold along the Mexico-US border.
In his thirteenth book, Alberto Ríos casts an intense desert light on the rich stories unfolding along the Mexico-US border. Peppered with Spanish and touches of magical realism, ordinary life and its simple props – morning showers, spilled birdseed, winter lemons – the book becomes an exploration of mortality and humanity, and the many possibilities of how lives might yet be lived.
Join Arizona Humanities for an evening celebrating our 2015 Arizona Humanities Award recipients, including Arizona Poet Laureate Alberto Álvaro Ríos. Enjoy appetizers, drinks, a silent auction and live music at the North Mountain Visitor Center in Phoenix.
The ASU Department of English’s MFA in Creative Writing Program celebrates its 30th year with readings, art, and music. Hosted by Arizona Poet Laureate, Alberto Ríos, and featuring readings by MFA program alumni Adrienne Celt and Oliver de la Paz, as well as distinguished faculty and former faculty including poets Peggy Shumaker and Beckian Fritz-Goldberg and authors Tara Ison, Melissa Pritchard and Matt Bell. Alumni Dan Breazeale and Dean Stover will provide music, presenting a jazz poem with piano. Additionally, in recognition of the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, there will be a special exhibition of When the Water Came, a collaborative project between photographer Rebecca Ross and poet Cynthia Hogue, current director of the MFA Program.
The first of several online and in-person information sessions for potential applicants to the Festival and Community Investment Grant programs will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at 3:30pm. Do Arizonans attend the arts? Are Arizona’s arts organizations truly undercapitalized? On Friday, March 25, 2016, Arizona Commission on the Arts Grants and Operations Coordinator Ben Watters will present a data-driven analysis of Arizona’s non-profit arts organizations and break down common misconceptions surrounding the sector. Using data aggregated via DataArts’ Cultural Data Profile, Watters will examine trends in revenue streams and how they relate to changes in modes of arts participation and engagement. Watters will also look at models of development for young and emerging organizations and employment of artists and other art workers.
Hosted by ASU’s School of Film, Dance & Theatre, this presentation is free and open to the public.
Grant Information Session
During the month of April, the Arizona Commission on the Arts will host an online information session on the new Arts Learning grant programs: Arts Learning Collaboration Grants and Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants. This session will be offered on two separate occasions.

- Arts Learning Collaboration Grants enhance the work of arts educators, classroom teachers and school-based arts programs through collaborative projects taking place in-school (during regular school hours), after-school, or during summer/inter-session and in-services.
- Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants enhance the work of community and social service organizations/ governmental entities through partnership projects with professional teaching artists and/or arts organizations.
Grant guidelines for both Arts Learning Collaboration Grants and Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants are available for review now. The application period for Cycle A will open the first week of April, 2016.
