On April 23-25, 2018 Sophie Weinzinger, a junior at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, represented Arizona at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, DC. Competing against State Champions from all 50 states and US territories, Weinzinger was one of only nine students to advance to the final round of competition!

This was Weinzinger’s third year participating in the national poetry recitation program. In 2017 she was first runner-up at the Arizona state finals. Previously, in 2015, her sister Leah was a state-level finalist.

“Poetry Out Loud, over the years, has not only offered me someone else’s shoes to walk a mile in, but every size and style imaginable. I am so grateful for the environment of empathy and understanding this program continues to create, sprouting from just the four walls of a local classroom, blooming to a nationwide platform.”
