Over the course of a weekend in April 2018, Barrio Stories offered residents of Tucson’s historic Barrio Anita neighborhood an opportunity to gather, celebrate, and learn about their community through an immersive experience featuring large scale video projections, live music, shadow theatre, performed poetry, historical reenactment, heritage foods, and audio tours.
Today, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, an agency of the State of Arizona, Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA), and Southwest Folklife Alliance (SFA) announced the 9 communities that will participate in the inaugural AZ Creative Communities Institute (AZCCI).

Today the Arizona Commission on the Arts, an agency of the State of Arizona, officially launched Next50, a statewide planning initiative designed to empower communities to activate creative assets and co-create ideas to fuel Arizona’s next 50 years.
Coinciding with our agency’s 50th anniversary, the NextAZ initiative will include a range of activities, such as focused research, meaningful community collaborations, targeted grantmaking, professional development, and inventive cross-sector partnerships.
This year, as the Arizona Commission on the Arts celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are proud to launch Next50, a visionary planning initiative designed to unleash the power of the arts in realizing Arizona’s brightest future. Through innovative programs, strategic investment, exploration and convenings, Next50 will empower communities to activate creative assets and co-create ideas to fuel Arizona’s next 50 years.
During our earliest discussions about Next50 in the summer of 2015, as we were working to define both the objectives and the spirit of this visionary planning initiative, we realized we needed an image. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and we believed that the right photograph could say more about Next50 than a dozen paragraphs.
Our NextAZ begins with you – your voice, your values, and your imagination. Maybe you write music, paint, teach, or perform. You sing with your church choir and jam with your neighbors. You make beautiful, challenging, and useful things. Show us where creativity thrives in your community, and share your creative spark.
