The Arizona Commission on the Arts is pleased to announce the hire of José Herrera to the position of Deputy Director!

José M. Herrera is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of experience leading mission-driven organizations through strategic planning, revenue growth, financial stewardship, organizational leadership, and stakeholder engagement. He has a strong reputation for driving successful turnarounds and fostering long-term, sustainable growth through innovative strategies and visionary leadership.

Throughout his career, José has helped nonprofits streamline operations, strengthen internal processes, and stay focused on their core mission by serving communities and creating meaningful impact. He has led initiatives that expand access to services, forge strong community partnerships, and enhance organizational sustainability.

As a proud first-generation college graduate, José is deeply committed to advancing equity, amplifying underrepresented voices, and building systems that serve all Arizonans. He is passionate about growing the impact of the arts statewide and supporting the creative individuals and organizations that help Arizona thrive.

José’s first day was April 21, 2025.

The position of Deputy Director has been vacant since the departure of Alexandra Nelson in December 2023.
