PHOENIX, AZ (December 23, 2009) – The Arizona Commission on the Arts (ACA) and the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) will co-host stART – Tucson, a professional development and networking opportunity to connect Arizona teaching artists and educators in support of lifelong learning in and through the arts on Thursday, January 21, 3:00-6:00 pm. Workshops, held at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, will be followed by a reception and networking event at the Tucson Pima Arts Council, 6:15-8:00 pm.The Sharing Teaching Artist Resources Tour (stART) is a program of the Arizona Commission on the Arts designed to bring teaching artists, educators, arts specialists, district arts coordinators, social service organizations, and local arts organizations together in their own community.

ARTS.CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.COMMUNITY: Partnership, Practice and Impact

Panel discussion moderated by Leia Maahs, TPAC Community Cultural Development Manager. Panelists will discuss the dynamic partnerships within one school-based artist residency that focused on English as a Second Language (ESL), youth voice, digital media and civic engagement.  

In conjunction with the panel discussion, the Tucson Pima Arts Council will present “Two-Way Mirror,” a research document written by Dr. Maribel Alvarez, Folklorist and Research Scientist for the UA Southwest Center. The research was produced for the Arts and Civic Engagement Impact Initiative through Americans for the Arts: Animating Democracy, and supported in part by the Kellogg Foundation.
