PHOENIX, AZ (July 26, 2010) – On June 18, 2009, the Governor-appointed members of the Arizona Commission on the Arts approved $2,238,052 in matching grants to arts and community organizations and schools for the 2009–2010 fiscal year. These grants are funded by the Arts Commission’s state appropriation, the Arizona Arts Trust Fund, the Arizona ArtShare Endowment, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
After sustaining a 42% budget cut, the Arts Commission continues its 43-year history of providing support to Arizona arts organizations through assistance and services to bolster the growth of arts programs in communities large and small. Arts Commission staff provide expertise to help individuals, established and developing arts organizations, and schools develop arts programs to serve the needs of all Arizona citizens. Executive Director, Robert C. Booker says, “In these times of financial crisis, we recognize and applaud the positive economic impact of the Arizona nonprofit arts industry. In a recent national study by Americans for the Arts, Arts and Economic Prosperity III, we find that the arts in Pima and Maricopa counties alone annually contribute over $500 million to our state’s economy. We are committed to building an Arizona where everyone can participate in and experience the arts.”
The Arts Commission is pleased to recognize 202 arts organizations with general operating support grants for providing ongoing public programming; these organizations are expanding audiences, improving artistic product and management capacity, and increasing the ethnic diversity of their programs and boards. Through grant funding and technical assistance, the Arts Commission will also be a partner in 78 arts education projects, and 39 festival project grants serving almost every county of the state this fiscal year.

One of 56 state and jurisdictional arts agencies across the United States, the Arizona Commission on the Arts is an agency of the State of Arizona that supports a statewide arts network.
