This week we’re celebrating National Arts in Education Week. At the Arizona Commission on the Arts, lifelong learning, in through and about the arts is a major component of our mission to imagine an Arizona where everyone can participate in and experience the arts. In service of this vital aspect of our mission, we administer a variety of grants, programs and resources in support of quality arts learning opportunities for Arizona residents across the aging spectrum.

Below are just a few:

Grants

Arts Learning Grants provide matching funds for quality arts learning projects which support lifelong learning in, through and/or about the arts.

Strengthening Schools through Arts Partnerships Grants provide support for substantive school/community partnerships that implement initiatives aimed at effecting change in low performing schools (Arizona “D” and “F” label schools) by strengthening teaching and learning in arts education and/or arts integration.

Programs

An ambitious and comprehensive initiative of the Arizona Commission on the Arts, AZ Creative Aging will build a creative aging infrastructure to enhance quality of life for older Arizonans. With funding from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, AZ Creative Aging will provide training to teaching artists, support the development of high-quality arts programs for older adults and embed creative aging knowledge and best practices in the community.

Arizona Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry – recitation and performance. Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Every two years, Arizona’s teaching artists, educators, arts administrators and arts education advocates gather to explore key areas and trends in education and the significant role arts educators play in the academic, social and personal success of students. The Joint Arts Education Conference is a co-presentation of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Arizona Department of Education.

Arizona Arts Education Census

In 2009 the Arizona Arts Education Research Institute (AAERI) commissioned a study of access to arts education in Arizona public schools. Their initial report on this research was published in 2010. Four years later, the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Arizona Department of Education published an update to the initial report. Curious about access to arts education in public schools in your part of the state? Visit the Arts Education Census page of our website to find both full and summary reports on the initial research and the 2014 update. You can also explore the 2014 data via an interactive website.
