The application period for Virtual Mini-Lesson Grants is now closed

This Teaching Artist Opportunity provides funding and training to support Arizona teaching artists in the creation of virtual lessons for older adults. Selected artists will produce short virtual mini-lessons to support aging organizations and caregivers. The virtual mini-lessons will enrich the lives of older adults across the aging spectrum and provide relief for learners and their caregivers through COVID-19 and beyond.

The Creative Aging Virtual Mini-Lessons will:

  • Be created specifically for adults 55+.
  • Be 15-20 minutes in length.
  • Support the principles and values of Creative Aging.    

Teaching artists selected to participate in the Creative Aging Virtual Mini-Lesson Grant will be required to participate in three virtual trainings with a focus on strengthening technical skills, incorporating Creative Aging best practices and accessibility for virtual learning spaces. Teaching artists will learn tools and techniques to utilize existing teaching skills to create innovative and relevant virtual lessons.

Teaching artists working in Creative Aging in any discipline who live and work in Arizona. A teaching artist is a practicing professional artist with the complementary skills and sensibilities of an educator, who engages people in learning experiences in, through, and about the arts. Teaching artists may work in long term or short-term residencies in classrooms or in a community setting or may lead program development through involvement in curricular planning and residencies with school or community partners.

Applicant Eligibility

Applicants must be individuals. Organizations are not eligible to apply. At the time an application is submitted, and the grant is awarded, an applicant must be:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • and a resident of Arizona.

Virtual Mini-Lessons Due Date

All virtual mini-lessons will be submitted to Arts Commission by November, 2020.

Artists will be compensated $500 to produce (1) mini-lesson video, with the opportunity to produce up to (3) for a total of $1,500, plus an additional $125 stipend to attend virtual trainings.

The Arizona Commission on the Arts believes in working towards a livable wage, stabilizing and strengthening the work teaching artists do in arts education, Creative Youth Development, Creative Aging and arts in community. We recommend to our constituents that teaching artists be paid $75-$100 per hour. The award amount reflects our recommended rate. We estimate each video lesson to take 5-6 hours to complete.

Narrative Proposal Details

  1. Provide a detailed description of your proposed virtual lesson(s).
  2. What specific population of learners has this virtual lesson been designed to serve (i.e. memory loss, mobility issues, active older adults)? How will the work you propose reflect or respond to this community of learners?
  3. How do you plan to make your virtual lesson accessible for all learners? What is your experience creating virtual lessons?
  4. What support would you need to accomplish this project?
  5. Describe your teaching philosophy. Do you use asset-based approaches? Explain.

If you share your proposal narrative in a video or audio recording keep it simple and to the point. The recording should be just you, describing your proposal and answering the questions listed above.

Please do not include edits of your work samples or special effects. Production quality of this recording will not be considered in your review. Just make sure we can hear and understand you and keep editing and post-production embellishment to a minimum.
