The City of Surprise is seeking professional artists or artist teams to design, fabricate, and install a unique, permanent signature piece for the new Fire Station 308 facility. The facility will be located roughly at the southeast corner of Litchfield Road and Cactus Road. The site location is a flat, square pad measuring approximately 150 sq. ft. x 150 sq. ft. (22,500 sq. ft. total), and is located on the exterior of the building and grounds, adjacent to a driveway leading into the fire station and visible from Cactus Road. The proposed design must incorporate interactive elements that are welcoming and inviting to residents and visitors of the facility and which are relevant to a public service and/or public safety theme. Proposals including benches or other elements for a seating area will be considered.

The artist(s) will work in collaboration with the SACAC to finalize a design that reflects the character of the surrounding area and may speak to the function of the nearby facilities. The artist is encouraged to consider terms such as “interactive,” “inviting,” “unity,” “public service,” “dedication,” “heroes,” and “rescue.” While traditional public service art such as human‐depicted sculptures and bronze‐cast figures will be considered, designs deviating from the typical tribute‐style art pieces would be preferred. Integration of color and utilization of multiple mediums are welcome for consideration. The proposed design must utilize durable materials suitable for outside elements including extreme heat, wind, rain, and changes in temperature, and must be suitable for normal outdoor wear and tear seen in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
