We’ll be choosing two (2) grant recipients of $1,000 for VR equipment for classrooms based on the following criteria:
- Is your educational plan original, creative and fun for students? Does it combine VR technology with carefully designed lessons to engage students and promote learning?
- Can your plan be reasonably carried out in the classroom? Will the lesson plan and VR experiences be implemented within the current or upcoming school year?
- Age appropriateness
- Will the VR technology be used for age-appropriate activities? Is your plan to use VR in the classroom tailored to fit the needs of K-12 students?
- Can you measure the success of VR learning in your classroom? Will there be corresponding tests, assignments or other measures of student knowledge and participation?
- Does your lesson plan fit within the word count limit (500 word max. in English) and is your application fully completed? Full eligibility description available below.

Fill out the following grant application in its entirety and submit before 11:59 PM ET on May 21st 2019 to be considered for an award of $1,000 to use toward the purchase of Virtual Reality (VR) equipment for educational purposes.
Please provide a creative lesson plan detailing how you would use Virtual Reality (VR) equipment in your classroom. Make sure to include how you would measure the success of the new technology in your classroom. (500 words max. Lesson plans must be written in English.)
What you need to know
All applicants must be employed full-time as a Kindergarten-12th-grade teacher at an eligible* elementary school, middle school or high school in the United States. Applicants must intend to continue teaching full-time throughout the 2020-2021 school year. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents of the United States.
*Note: To qualify as an eligible school, the school must appear in the National Center for Education Statistics database. Search for an accredited school here.
Description of Funds
Each individual (2 total) winning applicant (each a “Recipient” and collectively the “Recipients”) will receive a one-time $1000 grant payable by Visa Reward Card to be applied toward virtual reality equipment for their classroom. Funds are provided by Internet Service Providers, LLC which operates the website Fios.Verizon.com (the “Company”). The funds will be addressed to the Recipients and mailed to the school designated by the Recipient on his/her application.
Recipient selection and announcement
All applicants must complete the online form and submit their entry online no later than 11:59 PM ET on May 21st 2019 (the “Deadline”). After the Deadline, the Recipient will be selected by the Beacon Community Outreach Team following review of all entries received prior to the Deadline. Entries are judged on creativity, feasibility, age appropriateness, the ability to measure specific educational outcomes (i.e., test scores, assignment grades, ) and eligibility. The Recipient will be announced on or around May 27th, 2019 by the Beacon Community Outreach Team by email at the email address provided by the Recipient. If a Recipient is disqualified or fails to contact the Company within 72 hours of being notified of the results, the Company reserves the right to determine an alternate Recipient or not to award a grant, in its sole discretion.
Responsibilities of applicants
By participating in this program, each applicant expressly: (A) releases the Company, Verizon Communications Corporation and their respective affiliates and their respective employees, agents, representatives, designees, successors or assigns from any liability or claim of any kind or nature for any loss, claim, damages, or injury of any kind associated with participation in the program and acceptance, possession or use of any grant; (B) accepts and agrees to be bound by these rules and the Company’s decisions relating to participation in the program, selection of the recipient, and awarding of the grant, all such decisions being final; and (C) agrees that South Carolina law governs this program without regard to conflicts of law principles, and consents to the jurisdiction and venue of the federal, state, and local courts of Lancaster County, South Carolina, for the resolution of all disputes pertaining to or arising from this program. Each Recipient must complete a declaration of eligibility and release on forms to be provided by the Company. Each Recipient must be actively teaching full-time at an eligible (include a link to the requirement statement) elementary, middle school or high school during the entire 2020-2021 academic year without interruption, barring illness, emergency or military service. By entering, each applicant represents that his/her submission is a work of the applicant’s own original authorship, and agrees that the Company will have a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, worldwide right and license to use the submission in any manner. The Company reserves the right to disqualify any entry for any reason, including without limitation: materials not suitable for general public viewing; obscene, lewd or offensive materials; the use of third-party content or other materials not authored by the applicant; and materials previously published or entered into any other competition. The Company is not responsible for lost, late, damaged, or illegible submissions, faulty transmissions, or submissions containing any virus or other system malfunction. Judges’ decisions are final. Any taxes are the Recipient’s responsibility. Grant void where prohibited.
