ABOUT FEES Fees listed in these charts do not include travel, lodging and per diem.
To create the budget for your project, talk to the artist first about your ideas for the project and collaborate on the project objectives to design the actual number of activities. Then use the chart to calculate costs for the artist fees. Fees are sometimes negotiable depending on the number of artists involved and the design of the project. Be sure to talk to the artist about other necessary expenses such as travel/per diem (these are not included in the fees listed in the charts but may be eligible for grant support); or supplies, staging needs, etc., which are not eligible for grant support, before submitting your application. Discuss these fees with the artist before submitting your application. See the Commission's Guide to Grants: Organizations and Schools to determine the amount of funding you can request. Arts Learning Project and Project applicants should consult the Guide to Grants for Schools and Organizations Funding/Eligibility scale to calculate artist fees.
Project For all artist residencies, in schools, after-school or community settings, sponsors should plan on no more than four artist services per day. A service consists generally of one 45-60 minute activity with a fixed group of participants. Performances, readings and exhibitions are often longer and require more preparation, setup and teardown time, so artists should be scheduled for less than four services on a travel, performance, public reading or exhibition day. Services may include:
Lecture-Demonstrations - generally 45-60 minutes in length, in which an artist or artist ensemble provides examples and explanation of their artform to a group of people as either a formally staged, or a less structured activity in a small space, often interactive; and School or Public Performances - for performing artists/companies, a fully staged performance with all company members and often involving residency participants, to present the artform to the site and usually the public. Applicants are highly encouraged to incorporate a performance, reading or exhibition into their project to showcase the guest artist and artform in its full form.
