Congratulations to Erik Hollis of Tucson Magnet High
School!
Erik was named Arizona State Champion in February and traveled to
Washington D.C. to compete in the National Finals where he was among the top
12 finalists who competed in the final round of competition.
Poetry Out Loud seeks to
foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest
trends in poetry - recitation and performance. The program builds on the
resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry
movement and the immense popularity of rap music among youth. Poetry Out
Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and
theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, students
can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about
their literary heritage.
Beginning at the classroom level, students participate in classroom
recitations and the winners from each class advance to a school-wide
competition. Each school will then send a finalist
to the state-capital competition. Ultimately, one student from each state
will compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C. in April 2009.
