What the Commission Provides for
Artists
The Commission provides an array of programs for individual artists at all
stages of professional life. Programs are year-round, unless indicated.
Research and Development/Creation
Artist Projects Grants
The Arts Commission provides assistance to individual artists through artist
projects grants. Artists apply for project-related funding up to $5,000 for
research and development leading to the creation of a work of art. 11 artists
were served through this program in 2005. The deadline
for the 2008 Artist Projects Grant will be posted in May.
Career Advancement
Artist Career Advancement Grant -
Designed to assist practicing, professional and emerging Arizona-based artists
with specific professional development and skill building opportunities that
advance their work and careers. Professional Arizona artists may apply for up to $750 to help advance a specific
aspect of their career. 13 artists were served through this program in Spring
2005.
Career Development
Professional Development Grant
- Assists Arizona artists and representatives of, in general, small and
mid-sized Arizona arts organizations attend out-of-state
conferences/workshops/seminars/retreats that will
contribute to their professional growth. Subject to approval, Professional
Development Grants to artists or arts organizations are awarded up to $500. For
periods of extended study, grants may be up to $750. Over 50 artists are served
through this program each year.
International Arts
Program - Provides artists,
arts organizations and arts professionals with opportunities to participate in
cultural and artistic international exchanges. This program ensures
representation of Arizona artists and arts professionals, from a variety of
disciplines, at major festivals, conferences and exhibitions and exposes
residents in Arizona communities to international artists visiting the state.
The International Program offers three opportunities: International Arts
Exchange, Arizona Mexico Initiative and International Professional Development.
Regional Touring Program
- Performing artists receive assistance as they seek to expand their touring.
Artists may apply for sponsorship to Western Arts Alliance's annual conference
in September. Application Deadline is in March.

The Field Forward Network - Arizona is a Field Forward Network site, sponsored by
the Arizona Commission on the Arts. This international program created by
The Field NY, Inc., is designed to allow choreographers an opportunity to
hone their craft in a rigorous setting utilizing a specific method of peer

Arizona Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program
is a new program in Arizona that supports folk master artists and
apprentices working and studying together. It is a collaborative program
between the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Southwest Center at the
University of Arizona. This program is made possible by a grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts.
Residencies
Residency Roster
- Artists and communities connect through residencies with organizations and
schools. Grants are made to organizations and schools to help pay artists fees
and travel. The Arts Roster includes a section on artists in residence. Artists
are juried onto the Roster after an application, audition and interview. Artists
do not have to be on the Roster to receive Commission fee support. Organizations
and schools can also apply for Meet the Composer and Dance on Tour.
Teaching Artist Roster Guide
- now available online. Artists may apply to the Teaching Artist Roster through an online application and
interview. Letter of Intent Deadline is August 14,
2008. Application Deadline is September 18, 2008.
Recognition
Arizona Citizens for the Arts
- The Commission's partner organization, produces the annual Governor's Arts
Awards which recognize artists, educators, organizations, individuals and
businesses for their significant contributions to the arts.
Technical Assistance/Learning Opportunities
Arts Learning - Teaching artist
professional development opportunities; mentorships for residency artists
(artists newly juried onto the Commission's Residency Roster are provided
mentoring with an experienced Roster artist).
Performing Arts - Touring artists
development (information on how to get bookings); referrals to consultants,
agents and service organizations.
Literature - Publication preparedness and process;
referrals to statewide resources and service organizations and opportunities.
Visual Arts - Portfolio development
advice; gallery preparedness; public art proposal preparedness; grant writing.
