In 2013, the Artist Project Grant was replaced by the Artist Research and Development Grant, designed to support the advancement of artistic research, aid in the development of artistic work and recognize the contributions individual artists make to Arizona’s communities. In Sonoran Strange, Logan Phillips explores the deep contradictions of the landscape and culture of his homeland, the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. Published by West End Press, Sonoran Strange is Phillips’ first book-length poetry collection.
With his creative partner Adam Cooper-Terán, Phillips has presented a theatrical version of Sonoran Strange across the US and in Europe as a multimedia performance piece, incorporating video, music, and spoken word. This work was supported in part by an Artist Project Grant awarded to Phillips by the Arizona Commission on the Arts in 2012.
As a bilingual poet, performer and DJ Logan Phillips tours his art throughout the US, Latin America and beyond. Born to a family of Irish-Slavic descent and raised in the Arizona / Sonora borderlands, Phillips lived in and around Mexico City 2006-2011, where he contributed to organizing and hosting the country’s first regular poetry slam series.
Also in 2007 Logan began playing house parties and mezcalerĂa-speakeasies in Cuernavaca as DJ Dirtyverbs.
Phillips co-directs the transdisciplinary performance group Verbo•bala Spoken Video, recipient of a 2012 Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts for the performance piece Sonoran Strange. Sonoran Strange is also the title of Phillips’ first full-length book, forthcoming from Albuquerque’s West End Press.
Teaching and facilitating has been an important part of Phillips’ artistic practice since 2005, he currently serves as Codirector of Spoken Futures, Inc. whose programs include the Tucson Youth Poetry Slam.
Phillips was recently the only cultural worker recognized as 40 Under 40 by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Arizona Daily Star.
National Poetry Month 2016
In 1996, the Academy of American Poets established April as National Poetry Month. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this annual celebration of the poets and their work, the Arizona Commission on the Arts is throwing a spotlight on recent recipients of our Artist Research and Development Grant.

The Arizona Commission on the Arts and the ASU School of Theatre and Film’s Performance in the Borderlands will present an evening of poetry and performance commemorating the release of Sonoran Strange, a book-length poetry collection by Tucson poet Logan Phillips, on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. The event is sponsored by AZ Humanities.
